Most hardshell cases on the market are molded from standard PE (polyethylene). While PE is cheap to manufacture, it has a fatal flaw at 30,000 feet: under cold pressure, it becomes incredibly brittle. When a heavy, frozen PE case takes a direct impact on the tarmac, it doesn't bend—it cracks, or worse, it shatters.
